SLOVAKIA 2011

In May 2011, the Society returned to Slovakia, after a ten year absence. We once again visited some of the many castles in the west of the country once owned by the so-called "Blood Countess" Elizabeth Bathory, including Cachtice, where she spent her last days, reputedly walled up in her room in punishment for her alleged crimes.

We also re-visited the great castle at Orava, which was used for some of the exterior scenes in F. W. Murnau's silent classic Nosferatu, released in 1922. Amazingly, the locations used in the film ninety years ago are little changed.

ROMANIA 2009

In May 2009 the Society went back to its original roots with another trip to Romania, maintaining the six yearly cycle on from 1997 and 2003.

We took in the essential Dracula related sites in Transylvania of course, but also visited other areas of interest in the west of the country. This included the Society's very first visit to Lugoj, the birthplace of the man who became famous as Bela Lugosi.
